The cheap number is a padlock, not a timetable

I was already on the city-pair form when it hit me. On 27 September 2026 I opened italotreno.it looking for a Monday Milan–Rome seat, and the cheap number in the first column still refused to behave like a published corridor price. There is no Rome–Milan sticker. There is that morning’s inventory. That is a fussy distinction, and it's the whole shop.

The cheap column is a padlock. I keep saying padlock because that is what it felt like: you're not buying a train so much as locking Tuesday shut. Move the date inside seventy-two hours of departure and you pay sixty percent of the ticket again, plus whatever the new departure costs that morning. After that gate, the official fares page does not offer a later change window, and it does not list a standard refund. A limp cheap seat is still a seat. It's just glued to the clock you clicked.

Italo is the passenger brand of Italo – Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori S.p.A., the private high-speed operator with a Rome office at Via Casilina 1 (VAT 09247981005). The shops at italotreno.it and italotreno.com sell a named seat, not a walk-up metro chip. You pick a fare family and a carriage separately. They're not one bundled first-class thing. I am only going to name two fare products in this piece: Low Cost and Flex. The middle band exists. I will talk about its fees in words and leave the merchandising label on the checkout grid.

I think most people are shopping the padlock, not the espresso. The homepage still talks about fifty major cities and fifty-seven stations, with Naples–Rome in about an hour and Milan–Rome in about three. Some tickets continue on a coach or a ferry. I did not invent a live euro figure for any pair, because the operator does not publish a list price. Treat any number you see as that day’s leftover seats.

Who this booking is for

This cart is for a traveler who already knows the Italian city pair and wants a reserved high-speed seat without an airline-style bag fee. You can live with a digital ticket on a phone. You will read the change sentence before you pay. You already know you're not hopping a regional stopper, and you're not trying to sneak onto a night train this operator does not run. Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice, Naples, Turin, Bologna, Verona, Salerno: those are the kind of names that belong here. A town that is not on the fifty-seven-station list does not.

It also fits the person who can measure a suitcase on a Sunday kitchen floor before they tap pay. Infants from birth to thirty-six months ride free on an adult’s lap; each extra infant needs a paid seat. Pets up to five kilograms travel free in a carrier. Children under fourteen sometimes ride free in the standard carriage when an adult buys Flex and a family offer is actually on sale. Read the live conditions. I will not invent a promo that is unpublished on the morning you book.

Who should skip italotreno.it

Some of this is the map. Some of it is the clock. If your trip is a short regional hop, a sleeper, or a town the station list does not serve, this shop will sell you a handsome nothing. The state operator’s high-speed trains use overlapping corridors and sometimes different stops in the same city. The two companies do not honor each other’s reservations. A cheap Italo seat is useless if you needed the other brand’s train.

  • Skip it when you cannot freeze the clock seventy-two hours out and you were about to click Low Cost anyway.
  • Skip the standard carriage when the suitcase is larger than seventy-five by fifty-three by thirty centimetres.
  • Skip the lounge carriage if you only wanted a sandwich. A wider seat plus a paid lounge add-on, when that add-on appears, may cost less, and I will not invent the add-on price.
  • Skip unofficial resellers that cannot put your legal name on the ticket. A ticket sold outside authorized channels, or used by someone else, is treated as invalid.
  • Skip the digital-only path if you need a wheelchair space. Call Pronto Italo. Dedicated spaces exist on the older sets; newer sets list two spaces in carriage three, and EU size limits apply.
  • Skip it when your workplace needs a published corridor tariff on a reimbursement form. That list price is unpublished.

Low Cost and Flex are the only two I will name

Low Cost is the cheap padlock. You may change the date and time up to seventy-two hours before departure by paying sixty percent of the ticket plus any difference versus the fare then on sale. After that, the page goes quiet. No later change window. No standard refund percentage. If Tuesday is already carved in stone — a wedding, a court slot, a flight you cannot miss at the other end — the cheap column can be the right tool. If a meeting might slip, it is the wrong one. That is the same point again, said the way I would say it on the platform: the cheap seat is glued to the clock.

Flex is the spare key. You may change time and date as often as you like up to three minutes before departure. A passenger-name change is allowed for a fee; the exact euro figure for that name swap is unpublished on the page I used, so I will not invent it. If you cancel, the published refund is eighty percent. Flex includes one hour of extra time if you miss the train, subject to seats, through station staff or Italo Assistenza at +39 06 89371892. That hour is leftover inventory, if leftover inventory exists.

The middle fare family sits between those two locks: a twenty percent change fee plus any fare difference, up to three minutes before departure, and a forty percent refund if you cancel. Extra time on that band is a promotion when a promotion is actually running. Standalone extra time, on the morning I checked, costs ten euros plus any fare difference. An earlier-train try, up to two hours before the booked time, costs fifteen euros per passenger. None of those add-ons turn a Low Cost ticket into Flex.

  • Low Cost: change date or time up to seventy-two hours before for a sixty percent surcharge plus any fare difference; no standard refund listed.
  • Middle band: unlimited date and time changes up to three minutes before for a twenty percent fee plus any difference; forty percent back if you cancel.
  • Flex: unlimited date and time changes up to three minutes before; name change for a fee; eighty percent refund; one hour of extra time included if seats remain.
  • Paid patches: extra time at ten euros plus fare difference; earlier-train try at fifteen euros per passenger; selected refund option at eighty percent back up to seventy-two hours before.

Carriage is furniture. The standard coach has a reclining seat, a socket, free Wi-Fi, and a snack machine rather than a welcome tray. The wider coach adds legroom, a snack-and-drink welcome, Fast Track where that lane exists, and it drops the tight suitcase box. The lounge coach adds the widest armchair, lounge access from ninety minutes before departure, and catering for the trip. A closed four-seat room is sold on top of that lounge coach, not as a fourth fare. Pick the furniture after you pick the lock.

Open the official Italo city-pair form Pick the city pair you already know, then read the Low Cost and Flex columns against the chair you can actually sit in before you lock a named seat.

How you actually buy a named seat

Buying here is not a window conversation first. It is a form, a name, and a six-character code. The official digital office is italotreno.it and italotreno.com, plus a mobile site and the Italo Treno app. There's no booking commission on that path. You can change a ticket the fare allows, drop a pass into a phone wallet, and pay by card, Google Pay, or PayPal until three minutes before departure. You don't have to print. Staff accept the digital ticket, the app screen, a confirmation SMS, a station receipt, or an agency printout. Every ticket is named. Identity must match the passenger line.

  • Open italotreno.it and stay on the official form. City tiles are a menu, not a locked Monday.
  • Enter the pair you already named. Then choose Low Cost or Flex before you fall in love with a chair.
  • Read the change sentence and the refund sentence on that same grid. The cheap column’s seventy-two-hour gate is easy to miss if you only watch the euro figure.
  • Type the passenger’s legal name. A ticket used by someone else is treated as invalid.
  • Pay. Keep the six-character ticket code. Manage Journey asks for first name, surname, and that code.
  • You can attach a loyalty number the same way until three minutes before departure. Italian residents can request an invoice within twenty-four hours through Change Reservation.

Pronto Italo at +39 06 07 08 sells tickets daily from 7:00 to 23:00 with no sales fee. Your operator’s call charge still applies, and PayPal is not offered on that line. Ticket offices and self-service machines sit in network stations. At stations without gates you can reserve at the platform, board, and pay a train-issued ticket on board. Intermodal coach legs must be paid before boarding. Agency purchases often refund through the agency or through Italo Assistance on 892020. From an Italian landline, that assistance line lists thirty-point-five euro cents to connect and fifty-four-point-nine euro cents per minute. Those are call fees, not booking fees.

The suitcase box they hide behind the cheap column

Here is where I got stuck, and I got a little irritated about it. I put a hard-shell spinner on the kitchen floor and ran a tape over it, because the cheap column never waved a flag that the standard carriage uses a seventy-five by fifty-three by thirty centimetre box. A typical large spinner fails that box even when the ticket was cheap. Bags are included. There is no published bag count and no published weight fee. You stow the things yourself. Overhead racks are capped at fifty-three centimetres high and forty-two centimetres deep. The wider and lounge coaches may take a larger suitcase if it physically fits. Label each bag. Do not block doors, aisles, or reduced-mobility spaces.

Folded strollers, folding bikes, and folded scooters are allowed. Scooters stay in vestibules. Full-size bikes are not. On a coach continuation, electric bicycles and scooters stay off the bus. If staff find a non-conforming bag, the contract says you must take it off at the next stop and may owe a fine. You remain responsible for theft or damage. There is no airline-style checked hold. Lost property goes through FindMyLost, linked from the official luggage page. The wider carriage is the simpler fix when the bag, not the coffee, is why you leave the cheap seat.

> Price the fare as a padlock and the carriage as furniture. A Low Cost seat in a wider coach is still locked seventy-two hours out. I buy Flex when a meeting might slip. > > — Alex Rivera

What this ticket will not do

Italo is not Italy’s only high-speed railway, and it will not pretend to be a national pass. A cheap fare is useless if you need a regional or intercity service this operator does not run. The two high-speed brands do not honor each other’s seats. Starlink Wi-Fi is being fitted from mid-2026 with a 2027 finish in a February 2026 note, so not every train had the new satellite link on 27 September 2026. Older free Wi-Fi still uses the .italo network plus an email and mobile number.

Tickets last until arrival, at most one hundred eighty days from purchase. Lounge-coach tickets include lounge access from ninety minutes before departure at the stations that publish a lounge; hours vary by city. Fast Track at Rome Termini platform 12 and Milan Centrale gate C is listed for certain Milan–Rome tickets and paid lounge add-ons. Standard-carriage and wider-carriage buyers can sometimes add lounge access at checkout or later, up to forty-five minutes before departure, if the option appears and the code lists one passenger. If the option does not appear, it is unpublished for that train.

Wheelchair users should not treat the app as the whole path. Call Pronto Italo and ask for the space, because the older sets and the newer sets do not lay out those spaces the same way. If you lose the six-character code, use My Trips or 892020. Onboard staff can recover it against photo ID. Onboard purchase without a platform reservation is not the normal path, and it is forbidden on intermodal coaches.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change an Italo ticket after I pay?

Yes, if the fare family allows it. Use Manage Journey on italotreno.it or in the app, or call 892020 (+39 06 89371892 from abroad) with the passenger name and six-character ticket code. Flex changes are unlimited up to three minutes before departure. The middle band charges twenty percent plus any fare difference on the same clock. Low Cost only until seventy-two hours before, at sixty percent plus any difference. Published cancel refunds are forty percent on the middle band and eighty percent on Flex. Agency tickets often refund through the agency.

What happens if I miss the train?

Flex includes one hour of extra time if seats remain, through station staff or Italo Assistenza. That is leftover inventory, not a guaranteed later train. On other fares, standalone extra time is listed at ten euros plus any fare difference when the option is on sale. An earlier-train try, up to two hours before the booked time, is listed at fifteen euros per passenger. Low Cost does not grow a new change window because you are standing on the platform. If you're the kind of person who misses trains, buy the spare key before you need it.

Does the Italo app replace a station window?

For most travelers, yes. The app sells the same inventory without a booking commission, stores tickets, and supports the changes the fare allows until three minutes before departure. The mobile site covers the same jobs if you skip another app. A station window or Pronto Italo still matters for cash, a wheelchair space, or a train-issued ticket after a platform reservation. If you lose the code, use My Trips or 892020.

What bag fits the cheap seat?

All carriages include luggage in the fare. The standard carriage limits each piece to seventy-five by fifty-three by thirty centimetres. The wider and lounge coaches allow larger suitcases if they fit. You may bring several items if you can stow them without blocking movement. Folded strollers, folding bikes, and folded scooters are allowed; full-size bikes are not. There is no published weight fee and no checked hold. If a bag does not comply, the contract says you must take it off at the next stop and may owe a fine.

I lost the six-character code. Now what?

Open My Trips on the site or in the app, or call 892020 with the passenger’s legal name. Onboard staff can recover the code against photo ID. Manage Journey will not help you if you only remember the city pair and the approximate time. Keep the confirmation SMS or the email. The code is the ticket.

Can I buy a seat for someone else?

You can pay for someone else. The name on the passenger line still has to be theirs. Flex allows a passenger-name change for a fee; Low Cost does not turn into a transferable coupon because you bought it as a gift. A ticket used by a person whose name is not on it is treated as invalid. Type each legal name as it appears on the ID they will show.

Is there a booking fee if I call?

Pronto Italo lists no sales fee for tickets sold on +39 06 07 08 between 7:00 and 23:00. Your phone operator still charges its own call rate, and PayPal is not offered on that line. The assistance number 892020 is a different, paid line: from an Italian landline the site lists thirty-point-five euro cents to connect and fifty-four-point-nine euro cents per minute. The app and the website list no booking commission. I did not see a live card descriptor on 27 September 2026, so that statement line stays unpublished.

Check today’s Italo inventory on italotreno.it Confirm the fare lock, the chair, and the suitcase box on the official site before you walk to the platform with a spinner that will not fit.
